A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in national projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national projects.
