New research reveals that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using such medications should be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
